Start badminton with clear basics before you step on court

A simple UNLV player guide for open play, doubles movement, court manners, and what to bring to MPE.

Come ready to move, share court time, and ask stronger players for one small tip at a time.

Court ready

Four things beginners should know first

Use this as a quick pre-game check. You do not need to be advanced to join, just be ready to learn and rotate fairly.

01

Bring the basics

Indoor court shoes, water, a racket, and shuttles if you have them. Wear clothes you can move and lunge in.

02

Warm up first

Hit clears, drops, drives, and short serves for a few minutes before games. Start easy so your shoulder and knees are ready.

03

Learn court flow

Call the score before serving, rotate fairly, and use the wait list when courts are full so everyone gets time to play.

04

Try doubles basics

Attack front-and-back, defend side-by-side, and communicate early with simple calls like mine, yours, up, and out.

Serving basics

Serve underhand, keep it controlled, and say the score first. In doubles, serve diagonally and let your partner know if you want to play front or back after the serve.

Simple rally goals

Aim for consistency before power. Practice high clears to the back court, soft drops near the net, and flat drives when the rally gets fast.

Good court manners

Help pick up shuttles, avoid walking behind active games, and rotate off when your time ends so the next players can start smoothly.
